What is ChatGPT Merchant?
ChatGPT Merchant is OpenAI’s platform that allows online stores to integrate their product catalog directly into ChatGPT. Thanks to this, users can discover, compare, and buy products straight from ChatGPT using natural conversations.
It works as a new AI-assisted sales channel, where the store sends its catalog in a standard format and ChatGPT uses it to offer personalized and up-to-date recommendations.
Before connecting your catalog, you must complete the registration in the ChatGPT Merchant form.
How does ChatGPT Merchant work?
1. Catalog submission
The store uploads its product feed to OpenAI’s Merchant Portal:
This feed must follow OpenAI’s Product Feed Spec (fields such as title, description, price, availability, images, etc.).
2. Continuous updates
The feed can be updated frequently to keep prices, stock, and availability up to date. ChatGPT always uses the most recent version of the catalog.
3. Appearance in recommendations
Once approved, the store’s products may appear when a user asks:
- “Recommend running shoes for me”
- “I'm looking for an ergonomic chair”
- “What desk lamp options are there?”
ChatGPT uses the submitted catalog to deliver accurate and relevant suggestions.
4. Shopping experience inside the chat
If the store enables the checkout feature, the user can complete the purchase inside ChatGPT or be sent directly to the store to finish it.
5. Merchant control
The Merchant dashboard allows you to:
- View the feed status
- Validate catalog errors
- Manage which products are active
- Configure visibility and conversion options
How to generate a Feed for ChatGPT Merchant from Shoppingfeed?
Shoppingfeed has already prepared an export channel that meets OpenAI’s Product Feed requirements.
To activate it, go to Channels > All Channels and search for ChatGPT, or click here.
Once the connection is created, go to Mapping and configure your export according to OpenAI’s requirements. In the Help column, you can find instructions on how to set up the channel. As usual, you will see some pre-mapped fields, which you can modify in the third column if needed.
In the Settings tab, remember to define the export criteria. Check the boxes to include variants and/or out-of-stock products if you want to, and use the dropdown to specify whether new products should be sent automatically. You can also copy the URL from this screen, which you will need to provide in ChatGPT Merchant.
Finally, select the products to send to ChatGPT Merchant in the Selection tab and run an update to generate the feed.
Copy the URL and enter it in your OpenAI Merchant area.
